Our Dog-Friendly Road Trip to….Gettysburg!!!

This past Monday Doug, Zeke, and I took a spur of the moment trip to Gettysburg, PA! We only had Monday-Wednesday (with Doug having to be back at work Wednesday late afternoon.) Originally we planned a camping trip, but decided to spend a little extra money to celebrate Doug’s & my 12 year anniversary! So I headed to BringFido.com for some dog-friendly hotels. I HIGHLY recommend www.bringfido.com for planning trips/vacations with your dog. They list travel options, dog-friendly hotels & attractions, & any local dog parks, pet stores, etc. It is WONDERFUL. There were many hotels that were dog friendly but I was surprised that the rooms were as expensive as they were. I started to look at the few bed and breakfasts listed & they were only slightly more money & seemed to offer so much more! Doug LOVES history and I really wanted to do something different in honor of our anniversary. I was really taken with the http://www.gettysburgbattlefield.com/. I’m going to do a separate post with the specifics of this AMAZING B&B & its dog-friendliness. Basically it was on 30 acres of farmland, on the actual battlefield, was dog-friendly, and had a local historian speak for an hour every morning about Gettysburg history. The history talk sold it to Doug so we booked right away and stayed there.

Gettysburg on a good day is about 4 hours from NYC. Of course we had traffic so that added about an hour. Plus, I had read about a dog park, Canine Meadows, (very fancy, right?!) that was sort of out of the way but not too far so we decided to stop there to let Zeke run after so many hours on the road. A separate post on Canine Meadows will be coming soon! After stopping at that dog park, VERY worth it btw!, we continued on another hour to Gettysburg.

I’m not going to write much about the trip, the pictures will show you how beautiful & what a great trip it was. I will say that the town of Gettysburg is very dog-friendly. We saw several stores with a “dogs welcome” sticker in the window & even a local car wash with a dog wash section! Dogs are allowed everywhere on the battlefield except inside historic buildings or the cemeteries. We did the Auto tour and picked up a CD with an audio commentary. It was supposed to take you through the main battlefield stops in 90 minutes. That didn’t happen. We spent about 5 hours on the battlefield and only made it halfway through the tour! We stopped constantly, took tons of pictures, and did some extra walking on little side trails. It was FUN & Zeke was exhausted after!

Zeke was incredibly behaved on the trip. I was really surprised. Initially he was nervous going into the B&B-tail tucked, bolting, panting, etc. But after setting up his crate & making our room “home base” he settled in very well. The second night we even left him in our room, with free-range (we bought his crate for this reason but he didn’t need it!) for a few hours while we went bowling! We came back to him asleep on our bed. No whining, no destroying anything, no freaking out! I was very proud of him. We could come and go through our room door without having to worry about him running out he listened to every “stay” and he even did well with the gas fireplace that we used at night. And he didn’t chase the farm cats….too much.

Enjoy the pictures & I HIGHLY recommend taking a Gettysburg trip if you have a dog and love history. It was phenomenal!

  1. What a great trip!

  2. Zeke looks like he was not too sure about Mr. Lincoln-that sounds like a fabulous place to have stayed-
